The Japanese craft of Kanazawa gold leaf
About Silver Leaf
Gold and Silver Leaf, a traditional material used in Japan for centuries, is often featured in the decoration of temples, lacquerware, ceramics, and other crafts, with Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture being particularly renowned for its high-quality production that reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage.
With our products, we offer handcrafted items made with these materials, allowing people worldwide to experience Japanese craftsmanship through elegant and practical designs.
About Kanazawa City
Kanazawa, located in Ishikawa Prefecture, is a city with a long history of preserving traditional crafts and performing arts. Famous for its gold and silver leaf production as well as Kutani pottery, Kanazawa is a place where Japan’s artistic heritage continues to thrive. The city’s location near the Sea of Japan gives it a unique climate, with heavy snowfall in winter and lush greenery in spring, contributing to its distinct charm and craftsmanship.
The Process of Creating the Silver Leaf Dial
Note: This product uses silver leaf instead of gold leaf to faithfully replicate the characters’ color schemes, though the production process is the same as that used for gold leaf.
Melting and Casting
The metal is heated to approximately 1300°C and melted for 10 to 15 minutes before being poured into molds.
Rolling and Stretching
The solidified metal is rolled and stretched into strips, a process repeated around 20 times to reduce the thickness to approximately 0.02mm to 0.03mm.
Thinning and Finishing
The strips are further processed to achieve an ultra-thin final thickness of just 0.0001mm.
Coloring
The silver leaf is then carefully hand-colored by skilled artisans, with each piece painted individually to reflect the character’s essence.
